THE BOXING LEGEND HIMSELF DISHES OUT THE ULTIMATE FITNESS TIPS AND TRICKS
THE RIGHT WAY TO THROW A PUNCH:
First and foremost, to throw a punch correctly you have to make sure your feet are in the right position. Ot all starts from the base. Making sure you are in the correct position to throw the punch you want and are not off balance is crucial. Once your feet are right you can then throw the punch you have set up to throw. So if you are an orthodox fighter and you want to throw a left hook your left foot will be in front and your head will be positioned correctly. That will allow you to then rotate your body and punch from the hip so to speak. If you do that your punch will have the maximum power behind it.
THE WRONG WAY TO THROW A PUNCH:
If your feet are positioned wrong you’re never going to throw a punch correctly. So anything with your feet badly positioned is the wrong way. Also you want to be able to throw a punch and move out because for sure something will be coming back.
MY FAVOURITE FIGHT SO FAR:
Luis Castillo vs Diego Corrales was an epic fight. For those who haven’t seen it, it’s a must watch.
MY MEALS CONSIST OF:
During training for lunch and dinner I eat a lot of fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, meat and good carbs! Usually at breakfast I’ll have oatmeal or eggs and a protein shake. When I’m not boxing I’m a bit more relaxed about what I eat but I’m still conscious about what I’m putting in my body.
DO YOU TAKE IT TO HEART WHEN SOMEONE REJECTS AN OFFER OF A FIGHT?
I don’t take it to heart. I just want to make the best fights for the fans and when other fighters don’t want to do that it’s a shame. The fans deserve to see the best fighters face each other – that’s why we’re in the sport.
WHY FLOYD Mayweather WON’T FIGHT ME:
He knows I have a style, which can cause him serious problems. He’s used to fighting guys coming at him but it’s been a long time since he’s ever faced anyone with my speed and movement. It’s a tough fight for him and he knows it.
WHAT’S THE ODDEST TRAINING TECHNIQUE THAT YOUR COACH HAS EMPLOYED?
I’m not sure, but I’ve put weights on my head to help build up my neck muscles which was quite strange the first time I ever did it.
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE WORK OUT?
Morning time runs aren’t the best sometimes but you get used to it as you get into camp. It’s part of the dedication of boxing waking up in the early hours and sacrificing. That’s how champions are made!
LEAST FAVOURITE FOOD?
Probably anything that doesn’t have much flavour to it and is quite bland. I have to have a bit of life to my food!
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE ANYONE HAS EVER GIVEN YOU?
Mike Tyson once told me to keep God first and just keep working hard. When you do that you can never fail.HOW MANY PULL-UPS I CAN DO IN A ROW:
I usually do sets of 20 when in training camp. I’ve never tried to see how many I can do in one go. I’m going to give it a try though next time I’m in camp now!
THE ONLY THING MY WIFE CAN BEAT ME IN EATING:
She likes American candy because she’s from the States, but even then I can run her close!
SUCCESS IS:
Family, faith and health. That’s all you need.
HOW OLD I WAS WHEN I GOT MY 6-PACK:
I didn’t get my six pack until I was a teenager around 14 or 15 years old. boxing and training regularly was the main reason for it.
WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH WHEN boxing IN A FIGHT?
I think my speed and my movement. Those are two of my best assets.
WHAT IS YOUR ACHILLES HEEL?
In the past, I’ve sometimes let my heart rule my head in the ring and that’s not been the wisest of things. However, as I’ve matured, I’ve gained that experience so it will only help me going forward.
IS IT HARDER TO DEFEND A TITLE OR FIGHT FOR ONE?
I think they’re just as tough as each other because when you are champion, or even if you’re highly ranked, you’re expected to fight top-level opposition all the time. But if you’re going in there against the champion usually, not all the time, he’s meant to be the best around so it has its own challenges.
